Kratom Extract in Canada: What It Is and What to Check
Kratom extract is the most concentrated form of kratom sold in Canada, and also the one most often misunderstood. Labels such as “25x” or “50x” sound precise, but they tell you less than you might think. This guide explains what kratom extract is, how it compares with ordinary powder, where it stands under Canadian rules, and what to check before you buy one.
What is kratom extract?
Ordinary kratom powder is dried kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) leaf, milled fine. An extract starts with a large amount of that leaf and concentrates it. Makers steep the leaf so the alkaloids come out of the plant material, then reduce what is left into a smaller, denser product. Methods vary from maker to maker, and most do not publish theirs in detail.
The result is far stronger, weight for weight, than plain powder. That is the whole point of an extract, and also the reason it is not a product for beginners.
Types of kratom extract
- Powdered extract: a fine, often darker powder that looks like regular kratom but is much more concentrated.
- Resin: a thick, sticky paste made by reducing the liquid further.
- Liquid extracts and shots: concentrates sold in small bottles.
- Extract capsules: capsules filled with extract rather than plain leaf powder. Read the label carefully, because they can look identical to ordinary kratom capsules.
What “25x” and “50x” really mean
An “x” rating is the maker’s description of how much leaf went into the product. In principle, a 25x extract was made from about 25 times its own weight in leaf. In practice there is no standard definition. Makers measure it differently, some round generously, and the number says nothing about how well the alkaloids were captured.
A more useful number is the alkaloid content measured by an independent lab. A good extract seller can show you a recent lab report for the batch you are buying that lists:
- the mitragynine percentage, which is kratom’s main alkaloid
- results for heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury
- results for microbes such as Salmonella and E. coli
If a seller can only quote an “x” number and cannot show a lab report, treat the strength claim as marketing. Our guide to reading a kratom certificate of analysis explains each line of a report.
Extract vs powder vs Super leaf-only powder
| Regular powder | Super (leaf-only) powder | Extract | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Whole leaf, milled | Leaf with stems and central vein removed, milled | Leaf concentrated into a smaller, denser product |
| Concentrated? | No | No: it is still plain leaf, just more refined | Yes |
| Typical sizes | 25 g to 1 kg | 25 g to 1 kg | A few grams |
| Who it suits | Most customers, including beginners | Regular customers who want a finer leaf powder | Experienced customers only |
“Super” strains are often confused with extracts, but they are not the same thing. A Super Green Maeng Da or Super Green Malay is plain leaf powder with the stems and veins taken out. Nothing is concentrated.
Is kratom extract legal in Canada?
Kratom extract has the same status as kratom leaf. Neither kratom nor its main alkaloids are listed in the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, so owning kratom is not a criminal offence. Health Canada has not authorized any kratom product as a food, drug or natural health product, so no extract can lawfully be sold for consumption or with health claims.
Health Canada does test for kratom’s alkaloids. In October 2020 it seized two sexual enhancement products in Montreal after its tests found mitragynine in them. Products that hide kratom alkaloids inside something else are exactly what regulators look for.

Who kratom extract is for
Extracts are for people who already know how they respond to plain kratom powder. Because an extract is so much more concentrated, a small amount goes a long way, and it is easy to take far more than intended. Health Canada warns that kratom can cause dependence and lists side effects including drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, seizures, liver toxicity and a rapid heartbeat. A concentrate makes those risks more pressing, not less.
If you are new to kratom, start with a small bag of powder or a sample pack instead. Talk to a healthcare professional before using any kratom product if you take medication or have a medical condition.
How to choose a kratom extract in Canada
- Ask for the lab report for the batch, and check the mitragynine percentage, heavy metals and microbes.
- Look for a named brand and batch. Sealed, labelled packaging with a brand you can look up is a basic minimum.
- Avoid health claims. A seller that says its extract treats pain, anxiety or anything else is breaking Health Canada’s rules, and that tells you something about how carefully it handles everything else.
- Be wary of “enhanced” products. Some products sold alongside kratom have alkaloids added or chemically altered. A plain leaf extract should list nothing but kratom.
- Buy from a Canadian supplier. International orders can be refused or seized at the border. Domestic orders do not go through customs. Our guide to US kratom vendors that ship to Canada explains the risks.
Storing kratom extract
Keep extract sealed, cool, dry and away from light. Powdered extract stores much like regular powder but fades faster once opened, so buy small amounts. Our kratom storage guide has more detail.

Frequently asked questions
Is kratom extract stronger than kratom powder?
Yes. An extract is concentrated from a large amount of leaf, so a small amount is much stronger than the same weight of plain powder.
What does 25x mean on kratom extract?
It is the maker’s description of how much leaf went into the extract, roughly 25 times its weight. There is no standard definition, so a lab report showing the mitragynine percentage is a better guide.
Is Super kratom an extract?
No. Super strains are plain leaf powder with the stems and central vein removed before milling. They are not concentrated.
Is kratom extract legal in Canada?
It has the same status as kratom leaf: it is not a controlled substance, but Health Canada has not authorized any kratom product for sale as a food, drug or natural health product.
Kratom is sold in Canada as a botanical product for research purposes. Health Canada has not approved it to treat any condition and warns that it can cause dependence.
