Yellow Vein Kratom: What It Is and How It Is Made
Yellow vein kratom is one of the most confusing names in kratom. There is no yellow-veined kratom tree, and two sellers can mean quite different things by “yellow”. This guide explains where yellow kratom actually comes from, how it compares with red, green and white, and what to look for if you want to try it in Canada.
Is there really a yellow vein?
No. Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) leaves have red, green or white veins, depending mostly on how mature the leaf is when it is picked. Yellow is not a fourth vein colour on the tree.
The name describes the finished powder instead. Our guide to kratom vein colours explains how picking time and drying shape every colour, and yellow is the clearest example of processing changing the result.
How yellow kratom is made
Sellers use “yellow” for a few different methods, and most do not say which one they use:
- Extended drying: green or white vein leaf is dried for longer, or in different conditions, until the powder turns a lighter, yellow-tinted colour. This is the most common explanation.
- Fermentation: some producers seal the leaf so it oxidizes before drying, which also changes the colour.
- Blending: some “yellow” products are simply mixes of other vein colours, often white and red.
Because the word covers all three, a yellow from one seller may have little in common with a yellow from another. A good seller will tell you which leaf it starts from.
Yellow compared with red, green and white
| Colour | Where it comes from | How customers usually describe it |
|---|---|---|
| White | Younger leaf, often dried indoors | The liveliest of the colours; a common daytime choice |
| Green | Leaf picked in the middle of its growth | Balanced, between white and red |
| Yellow | Green or white leaf with extra drying or processing | Usually placed somewhere between a green and a white |
| Red | Mature leaf, often dried in the sun or fermented | The calmest of the colours; often kept for the evening |
These are customer descriptions, not promises. Kratom is not approved by Health Canada to treat any condition, and the same strain can feel different from one person to the next. Our kratom strain chart lists every strain we carry by colour and region.
Yellow vs gold kratom
“Gold” kratom is sold in much the same way as yellow: as a processed or blended powder rather than a separate vein colour. Some sellers treat the two names as the same thing, and others use gold for a longer-dried or more heavily processed version. As with yellow, ask the seller how it is made.
Common yellow strain names
- Yellow Maeng Da: made from Maeng Da leaf. “Maeng Da” is a grade name rather than a region.
- Yellow Vietnam, Yellow Thai and Yellow Borneo: named after the region the leaf is said to come from.
- Yellow Bali and Yellow Sumatra: regional yellows sold by some shops.
Region names are trade names, and Canadian shops rarely publish where their leaf actually grows, so treat them as labels rather than guarantees.
Yellow kratom at Kratom Earth
We carry Yellow Maeng Da, made from mature Maeng Da leaf that is dried and processed to give it its yellow tint. Customers who buy it usually place it somewhere between a green and a white, and it suits people who already know the Maeng Da family and want something different from the three standard colours.
- Sizes: 25 g to 1 kg.
- Try it alongside other strains: Yellow Maeng Da is a choice in our 4 x 100 g sample pack and Mixed Half Kilos. A Maeng Da comparison of red, green, white and yellow is an easy way to see how processing changes the same leaf.
- Related strains: White Maeng Da, Green Maeng Da and Red Maeng Da.
What to check before you buy
- Ask how the yellow is made: extra drying, fermentation or a blend.
- Ask for a lab report for the batch, covering heavy metals and microbes. Ours are on our lab results page, and our guide to reading a certificate of analysis explains each line.
- Start small. Because yellows vary so much between sellers, try a 25 g bag or a sample pack before buying more.
- Buy from a Canadian supplier so your order doesn’t go through customs. Orders over $129 ship free anywhere in Canada; see our shipping policy.
Frequently asked questions
Is yellow kratom a real vein colour?
No. Kratom leaves have red, green or white veins. “Yellow” describes the colour of the finished powder after extra drying, fermentation or blending.
What is yellow kratom made from?
Usually green or white vein leaf that has been dried for longer or processed differently. Some yellow products are blends of other colours.
Is yellow kratom the same as gold kratom?
Often, but not always. Both names describe processed or blended powder rather than a vein colour, and sellers use them differently.
Is yellow kratom legal in Canada?
Yellow kratom has the same status as any other kratom: it is not a controlled substance, but Health Canada has not authorized any kratom product for sale as a food, drug or natural health product. Our page on kratom’s legal status in Canada has the details.
Kratom is sold in Canada as a botanical product for research purposes. Health Canada has not approved it to treat any condition and warns that it can cause dependence.
